"There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is." Albert Einstein
Welcome to Milagro Vineyard of Santa Clara Valley. Milagro means "Miracle" in Spanish. We are growers of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Sirah, Merlot, Moscato, Orange Muscat, Chardonnay (grafted over Petite Sirah), and Mourvèdre Grapes.
Milagro Vineyard, owned by the Rudolph family, is located on eight acres nestled on the western side of Twin Peaks Valley of the Santa Cruz range of mountains.
Twin Peaks valley has natural aquifers that flow from springs at the base of the mountains under the Pajaro River watershed which flows into the Pacific Ocean. The geology of the Santa Cruz Mountains consists of the "Franciscan formation" which is composed of shale, limestone, clay and and serpentine. The alluvial bench at the base of a steep ridge, on which Milagro Vineyard grows, has excellent drainage and exposure. The vineyard is situated only 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean that provides summertime cooling and a night time shift, which slows the ripening of the grapes allowing for excellent flavor development and a long pre-harvest "hang time" for our fruit.
Our vineyard is located in the Santa Clara Valley AVA (American Viticulture Area) which is one of the oldest grape growing regions in California. Prior to 1900, this area was considered one of the best growing areas of California.
The vineyard of petite sirah grapes was installed in 2006 by CK Vines of Clos La Chance Winery. The 2008 first harvest was released in May 2010, and dedicated to Onslow "Rudy" Rudolph. The 2009 harvest was released in May 2011 while the 2010 was released in May 2013. The grapes are grown using environmentally sensitive, sustainable practices. A small winery and crush pad were recently built on the property.
What is Petite Sirah?
Petite Sirah; Petite Syrah [peh-TEET sih-RAH, peh-TEET see-RAH] Grown mainly in California, this red-wine grape was initially thought to be related to the renowned SYRAH of France's RHÔNE region. Some, however, believe it is actually a variety called DURIF, which was also grown in the Rhone but is now almost extinct. Petite Sirah produces a deep-colored, ROBUST, and PEPPERY wine that packs plenty of TANNINS and has good AGING ability. Although not as popular as CABERNET SAUVIGNON, PINOT NOIR, or ZINFANDEL, Petite Sirah does much better in California than in France and has a following among those who like BIG, full-bodied wines. Although in vogue during the 1970s, Petite Sirah's popularity has since diminished somewhat, and acreage throughout the state has subsequently declined. In addition to being bottled as a VARIETAL WINE, Petite Sirah is often blended with other varietals (ZINFANDEL, for example) to give them zest and complexity.
